What happens to a website without maintenance

An uncared-for website does not stay the same: it gets worse. It slows down, breaks, becomes vulnerable, slides on Google. The typical timeline of an abandoned website — and what it takes to avoid it.

There is a widespread and understandable idea: the website is done, it is online, it is finished. Like a sign: you mount it and it stays there. Unfortunately a website resembles a sign less than it resembles a car — if nobody looks after it, it does not stay the same: it gets worse. Here is the typical timeline.

After six months: the slowdown

The technologies a website is built with receive constant updates. Nobody applies them, and the first signs are subtle: the site opens slower, some photo fails to load on the first try. Google, which measures speed, starts taking note.

After a year: the first breakages

A contact form that stops sending (and nobody notices: requests simply stop arriving). An expired security certificate, with the browser showing “not secure” to visitors. Frozen contents — the summer closure announcement from two years ago still on the home page.

After two years: the real risk

Outdated websites are the favourite target of automated attacks: you do not need to be famous, just vulnerable. A compromised website can end up stuffed with junk links, flagged as dangerous by Google, or gone entirely. Cleaning up always costs more than preventing — and meanwhile the image is what it is.

The mathematics of care

Maintenance is boring to sell and even more boring to talk about, but the numbers are simple: a few dozen euros a month of constant care versus the cost of a website to clean, redo or — worse — the value of the clients who meanwhile gave up because “the form didn’t work”.

Our care service works like this: a free check-up to tell you how your website is doing today (even if we did not build it), then monthly care — updates, backups, checks, and the small changes when you need them, same-day. You forget about it; that is exactly the point.
